Most 3D printer sites imply far more hands-on testing than they have actually done. Here is exactly what our recommendations are built from, so you can judge them for yourself.

What our reviews are based on
Unless a page says otherwise, our reviews are specification and evidence analysis, not first-hand testing. That means we work from:
- Manufacturer specifications, checked against the current model revision
- UK retail pricing and stock availability at the time of writing
- Published third-party testing from reviewers who did put the machine to work
- Owner reports at volume — recurring faults matter, one angry review does not
- Firmware, slicer and ecosystem support, which decides how a printer ages
Where we have used a printer ourselves, the page says so explicitly and describes what we printed. We would rather tell you our basis is documentary than dress it up as a lab test.
How we rank things
A recommendation has to survive a simple question: who is this actually for? Every guide names both the buyer a machine suits and the buyer who should avoid it. A printer that wins on paper but frustrates beginners is not the beginner pick.
We weight four things, in this order:
- Reliability out of the box. Print quality means nothing if the first fortnight is spent troubleshooting.
- Total cost in the UK. Purchase price, delivery, consumables and the upgrades a machine effectively requires.
- Fit for the stated job. Miniatures, functional parts and large props have genuinely different requirements.
- Support and longevity. Spare parts, firmware updates and an active community for when something breaks.
Prices and availability
All prices are in pounds sterling and reflect UK retail at the time of writing. 3D printer pricing moves constantly — treat every figure on this site as a guide, and check the current price before you buy. Pages carrying commercial recommendations are reviewed quarterly; explainers are reviewed annually.
How we make money
3D Print Picks earns commission when you buy through our links, which is what pays for the research. It does not buy a placement. We are not paid by manufacturers, we do not accept payment for reviews, and no brand sees an article before it is published. Where the honest answer is “buy the cheaper one”, that is what we write.
